This is in response to new money saving measures announced by Canada Post.
CANADA - The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has declared a countrywide strike.
The union's 55,000 Canada Post members walked off the job last night, after the Crown Corporation announced new measures to relieve financial pressure. This includes slowing down the frequency of mail delivery, closing some post offices, and the end of door-to-door mail delivery for almost all households in the next decade.
The union says this is an attack on our postal service, while the crown corporation claims the strike activity will further deteriorate Canada Post's financial situation. Canada Post has reported a decline in letter mail and parcel deliveries.
A process is in place to deliver existing live-animal shipments during the strike, but no new shipments will be accepted. Both sides have also agreed to continue delivering government welfare cheques.
