WOODSTOCK - City Council has granted the use of Southside Park for a candlelight vigil
In light of the recent suicide crisis and more than two weeks after the Woodstock student walkout, a candle light vigil will be held at Southside Park on June 25th.
City council granted the use of the park for the vigil. It will be held at 7:30 PM. The vigil is for all the youth who have lost their lives to suicide this year.
"It hits home. No matter who you are and whether you knew them or not," says the organizer of the vigil, Melissa Shersby. "This is our children that we're losing and this is our future that we're losing and we got to make sure that if they don't see a future, that we show them that there is one."
She adds that she took to social media to organize the vigil, "The kids had decided on June 25th at 7:30 PM because they wanted to give some of the families some time to grieve, especially with the most recent one now."
"It's not just students. I hope everybody comes, whether or not they are friends or family or just anybody in the community really. That way they can see that there is help," she says.
Shersby also adds that CMHA councillors will be there to speak with grieving students.
In the past four months, five youth have taken their own lives and about 20 others have attempted suicide.
