With the legalization of Marijuana this Wednesday the Ontario Dental Association would like to remind you about oral care.
OXFORD COUNTY - Whether you'll be trying it out for the first time, or maybe are a bit familiar with it already, The Ontario Dental Association wants you to be aware of the effects cannabis can have on your oral health.
Just like with cigarettes, cannabis smokers run the risk of developing oral cancer both from the drug itself as well as the smoke it produces. When THC enters the bloodstream, it affects many bodily systems and can weaken your immune system. Coupled with a dry mouth symptom, this can more easily expose users to gum diseases.
Cannabis smoke has also been known to stain the enamel of your teeth and cause demineralization, so as always, it's important to make sure you brush your teeth regularly. And of course, it's important to be aware of the amount of sugar you consume when smoking cannabis or taking edibles.
Oral cancer, gum disease, staining, cavities and weakening your enamel are all causes of these activities and should be taken seriously. So it's important to talk to your dentist about smoking up and how you can prevent these from happening to you.
And here's just a little bit about the Dental Association. Starting off the ODA are the voluntary professional association for dentists in Ontario since 1867. Today, they are more than 9,000, or nine in 10, dentists across the province.
The ODA is Ontario's primary source of information of oral health and the profession itself. For more helpful dental care tips, click here.
