Users of the free electric vehicle charging stations are being asked to donate to help families pay heating bills in the winter.
WOODSTOCK- The United Way and Woodstock Hydro are encouraging those using free electric car charging stations to donate. The proceeds raised will go towards subsizing the heating bills of Oxford County families during the winter months. The program is known as the Energy Assistance Program or EAP. For every dollar donated Woodstock Hydro will match it up to 2 thousand dollars.
Jay Hademan from Woodstock Hydro says donations can be made in several ways.
"The one is people can take their smartphone and scan the code and it will take them to Charge Up United Way.ca and they can pay online or they can go into our foyer and we have a secure drop box and they can make a donation that way."
Woodstock Hydro installed electric vehicle charging stations a little less than a year ago. The two charging stations are free to use and are the fastest level 2 chargers available at 16 kWh.
Woodstock Hydro is also in talks with Tesla to install new super chargers this fall which would provide 135 Kw per hour which is ideal for the new Tesla vehicles that have a much higher kW capacity than other electric vehicles.
They are working with us and other communities along the 401 corridor to expand their super charge station," said Haedman.
"Because Tesla has a 400 to 500 km range and when they install a supercharge station a tesla owner can get about an 80 per cent charge in 20 minutes." If all goes well those charging stations would be available this fall.
The government is hoping to have a half a million electric vehicles on the road by 2018.
