TOWNSHIP OF MALAHIDE - A nine year old is in critical condition and is on life support in intensive care after an ATV crash on a private property in the Township of Malahide.
Elgin OPP say a 6 year old was driving the quad with four other children on board last night around 8:30. They included a 2 year old, a 4 year old and two 9 year old boys. None of the children were wearing helmets or other safety gear and had been riding the machine in the back yard while family members were on the other side of the residence at a family function. An investigation has revealed the six year old driver was attempting to turn a corner at the back of the property when she un-intentionally pressed the throttle, lost control and hit two pine trees. The nine year old boy struck one of the trees and then became trapped between the ATV and one of the trees. Family members rush to the scene and freed the child who was unconscious. None of the other children were hurt in the crash. The child was airlifted to the hospital where he remains on life support in intensive care.
“This is a very tragic example of the dangers of ATV’s. ATV’s are powerful vehicles, not toys for children. ATV’s must be operated by trained and skilled operators. The lack of safety gear and the fact that there were five children on board ranging from ages two to nine is a great cause for concern.” - Inspector Brad Fishleigh, Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police Detachment Commander.
The Elgin County OPP continues to investigate the collision. Charges are pending
