City Responds to Civic Centre Hockeyville Nomination

Director of Parks and Rec Brian Connors has directed his staff to come up with a plan if the Civic Centre wins Kraft Hockeyville.

WOODSTOCK - The Director of Parks and Rec for Woodstock was happy to hear Civic Centre's nomination for Kraft Hockeyville, but it was a bit of a surprise.

Brian Connors says the city looked into upgrading the Civic Centre back in 2019.

"We had SPH Engineering come in and do a full evaluation of the Civic Centre and what it would cost to get the Civic Centre upgraded for the next 20 to 25 years because it is 50-years-old right now. They brought back a cost of $5.7-million."

Connors says a new recreational needs study is in the works and closing the Civic Centre and building a new arena is one of the options being considered.

The City will start gathering public input for the study sometime in the late spring or early summer.

If the Civic Centre wins Kraft Hockeyville, the City would receive $250,000 for upgrades. Connors has asked his staff to have a plan ready to go if that happens.

"One of the things I've asked my staff to do is start to look at things that we could do the the Civic Centre that would improve it but also if the direction is to build a new arena, then whatever we put in which is fairly new would be able to be mobile."
