A case of a disease that can be deadly to young piglets has been confirmed in Oxford County.
OXFORD COUNTY - Ontario Pork is confirming a virus that can be deadly to young pigs has appeared in Oxford County.
Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea, otherwise known as PED, is a disease that causes vomiting, diarrhea, and even death in pigs. In nursing piglets the effects can be severe with some cases causing a mortality rate of 100% in a herd. The mortality rate is low with growing pigs.
The newest Oxford County case was found on a Finisher Farm on June 7th. The last reported case in Oxford was in July of last year.
PED is not considered a threat to food safety or to human health.
