Roughly 115 thousand teachers across the Province will enter into a legal strike positions if a deal cannot be reached soon.
Contract talks between the union representing the Catholic English Elementary and high school teachers are expected to continue today.
The Catholic school boards will be in a legal strike position on Monday and the unions representing public high school and elementary teachers will be in a legal strike position soon. Ontario Education Minister Liz Sandals has expressed optimism about reaching a new agreement with the four major unions before school starts. However she also issued a warning to teachers saying any job actions they plan, would amount to a limited strike, not a work to rule campaign.
The unions represent 115 thousand teachers in Ontario and have talked about doing a work to rule campaign, which could include things like refusing to supervise extracurricular activities or participate in parent teachers meetings. Elementary teachers were in a work to rule campaign at the end of last semester refusing to fill out report cards across the Province including the Thames Valley District School Board. However Sandals says that once teachers are in a legal strike position they can't unilaterally decide on work to rule campaigns.
