County Council Considers Future of Rail Travel

During County Council this week, council will be taking a closer look at rail travel in Oxford County and a push to improve service

Oxford County council will be talking about the importance of Canada's Via Rail Passenger Service to Southwestern Ontario and the County on Wednesday night.

Council is being asked to encourage a strategic partnership between the Federal Government, the Provincial Government, VIA Rail, and Metrolinx to advance a coordinated and enhanced Quebec-Windsor Passenger Rail Corridor. CAO for the County Peter Crockett tells Heart FM he thinks this corridor will be great for Oxford County.

"We think it is vital to southwestern Ontario, including Oxford County, and the motor court system that is envisioned within Network Southwest. It has the potential to be a South Western Ontario wide transit system - that is essentially what it could boil down to."

If approved the partnership would say that Oxford County will support the concept of the plan and want to get involved in the discussion. Crockett tells Heart FM what they are basically asking council to do.

"We're saying that what we want to do is advocate with the Prime Minister, the Premier, Via Rail and Metrolinx - all of those partners that it will take to make Via the system that it should be and the motor court system what it should be. Essentially what we are saying if council endorses this is we support the project and want to get into the discussions and help move things along if we can. More importantly we want to advocate for South Western Ontario and Oxford County that we think this plan is something that we will help to advance and provide the transit systems that will make us as effective and efficient moving people around our community as we possible can."
