Oxford County and several partners are moving on to the next phase of rehabilitation for a stretch of land near the Thames River
Oxford County is ready to start Phase 2 of rehabilitation of the Thames River corridor.
The county purchased the 269 acres of floodplain located between Woodstock and Beachville years ago in order to save it.
Warden David Mayberry tells us about the work that was done during Phase 1.
"A few years ago we did Phase 1 which was first tree planting, tall prairie grass, putting in some wetlands and habitat for wildlife, whether it be for snakes, birds, or whatever."
Mayberry adds more reforestations will be done during Phase 2.
"So the next three year project is continuing on with more reforestations, putting in some more wetlands, which is kind of normal when you think of a river bottom or a floodplain area. It's to encourage habitat."
There's a stretch of the Thames River Trail east of Beachville which travels along the edge of the property. Those in that area will be able to watch some of the rehabilitation work in action.
Since the project began the county has been working with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Stewardship Oxford, Ducks Unlimited Canada, and the Thames River Conservation Authority.
