The Real Dirt on Farming magazine aims to inform consumers about food sources.
A new magazine is set to be distributed across Oxford County to educate the public on where your food is coming from. Real Dirt on Farming has now teamed up with Farm and Food Care to provide local farming information after a recent poll was released that only 2% of Canada's population is involved in agriculture. Virginia Dibble, Secretary and Media Coordinator, for the Oxford County Junior Farmers thinks it is crucial to know what you are eating.
"The farming population is getting smaller and smaller so we have more and more consumers who are disconnected on where their food comes from. As a group we think it is very important to educate. They might hear a lot about agriculture from a non-agricultural source but this way we can get the right information out to them."
Dibble is making it her mission to inform the other 98% who aren't involved in farming what the magazine is all about. Dibble explains what the purpose of the magazine is for.
"The Real Dirt on Farming magazine is published by a group called Farming Food Care out of Guelph and it attempts to tackle some of the tough issues in agriculture from a consumers point of view it explains why farmers use pesticides, why farmers keep animals in barns things like that that consumers maybe don't know about agriculture." Dibble is disturbed by how many people are unaware of what they are eating and they are hoping that Real Dirt on Farming Magazine will educate Oxford County.
"People are disconnected from there food from where there food comes from this way we can try to educate them a little bit and with the magazine we can reach more people then we can just talking to them one on one."
The magazine will feature stories and facts about farming across Canada.
