Elementary teachers are prepared to commit to phase two of their campaign if a deal is not reached by the start of the school year.
The next round of bargaining talks between Elementary Teachers and the Province will take place on September 1st.
Before a deal can be reached they Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario and the Province need to come to an agreement, and then each ETFO chapter will also have to negotiate with individual school boards. President for the ETFO Thames Valley Local Craig Smith tells Heart FM why elementary teachers are preparing for job action.
"The issues around workload, not only the workloads that are generated through endless board and ministry initiatives but the professional judgement pieces around those workload issues are key. So the issues around control of prep time which is what teaches use to plan their classes."
Smith says if a deal is not reached before the start of the school year, elementary teachers will begin phase two of their work to rule campaign. It will include not participating in any field trips, or parent teacher nights and open houses. One thing not included in the job action is extra curricular activities which means sports teams and after school clubs will still be happening.
Smith says in order to reach a deal the ETFO has to come to an agreement with the Province and they also have to get a local deal done with the TVDSB and more talks are planned for September.
"Locally we have had 15 negotiating sessions with the school board, our employer. Those I would describe as purposeful and productive talks. We have three more dates set to meet in September."
