It was almost unanimous as 98 percent of Elementary Teachers in the ETFO have voted in favour of a strike action if talks with the Province continue to break down.
ONTARIO - 98 percent of Elementary Teachers in the ETFO have voted in favour of a strike action.
Central votes were held over the past couple of months as the tensions between teacher unions and the province continue to escalate. The union is not currently in a strike position as the talks are still ongoing and they are meeting with a conciliator on Monday.
According to the ETFO web site, the vote is one of the first steps to move towards strike action.
"The results of ETFO’s central strike votes convey to all parties that our members are expecting fair deals to be reached at ETFO central tables. But a vote in favour of a strike does not necessarily mean ETFO members will be engaging in job action.
ETFO remains optimistic we can reach a fair deal at its Teacher/Occasional Teacher and Education Worker Central Tables; central strike votes are an important factor in supporting that goal."
The ETFO represents 83,000 public elementary teachers, occasional teachers and educational professionals in Ontario.
They have made it clear, they are not willing to accept funding cuts. In October they filed for conciliation after negotiations with the Province started to stall.
High School Teachers are also holding strike votes right now, with those results expected in the coming weeks. You can read more about the strike votes online here.
