NORFOLK COUNTY - Norfolk OPP are warning residents to be cautious on Facebook after a local resident was duped out $900.
Police got a call on Wednesday morning from the victim. They had received a notification on their Facebook account indicating that they had won a $250,000 prize. In order to claim the prize and verify their identity, they had to purchase Google Play cards. The victim subsequently purchased approximately $900 dollars and then provided the suspects with the pin numbers. The victim later realized that this was a scam and immediately contacted police.
Scammers are increasingly using Facebook as a means of communication to target potential victims. The OPP are warning all residents to be on the lookout for unsolicited Facebook messages claiming you've won a prize.
