"We want to be out here, not so much picking a side but letting both sides know that we want to be in class and doing real work."
WOODSTOCK - Some of the Fanshawe students in Woodstock are walking the picket lines today.
Student Council President John Hooper says the students will be outside from 11 am to 3 pm today.
"We wanted to get a time where the students could get together and show we want to get back to class, we want to be out here, not so much picking a side but letting both sides know that we want to be in class and doing real work."
Hooper says the strike has been tough on the students who want to be in class, learning and in a class environment. He notes the students are doing the best they can given the current circumstances.
"I think it is a different experience for everybody, some students have gone back to work to get some shifts and make some money, but ultimately we want to be in class and learning in a class environment. We have all of our text books and stuff like that and I know a lot of students are doing study groups on their own. Courses are kind of working together to stay fresh, like our Police Foundations course has went over the exam time and we know that we have to do exams when we get back."
The faculty strike at Ontario colleges is now in it's third week and so far no real progress has been made between the union and the College Employer Council.
The strike involves more than 12,000 professors, instructors, counsellors, and librarians across the province. The main issues are fairness for contract faculty, a voice for faculty is academic decision making and academic freedom as well as maintaining a stable flow of full time faculty.
