The fatal fire on Sunday serves as a tragic reminder about the importance of having working smoke alarms.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Fire Department has released the identity of the woman who was killed in a structure fire.
On Sunday night firefighters were called out to a blaze at 258 Dundas Street. When they arrived smoke was showing from the front of the residence. A 72 year old woman was located at the scene and was unresponsive. She was rushed to the Woodstock General Hospital via Oxford County EMS and later passed away from her injuries.
The woman has been identified as Diane Coomber. Coomber was well known in the community and very active on social media. Reports of her death began to surface earlier this week in several Facebook groups geared towards Woodstock that she was an active member in.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has completed its investigation and determined that the fire cause was accidental due to an unattended lit candle. Also of note was the property did not have any working smoke alarms. Damage to the home is pegged at $95,000.
Acting Fire Chief Jeff Slager says this fire serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of having working smoke alarms at your home.
“Working smoke alarms, on every level of your home, can literally be the difference between life and death. Additionally, this event is a reminder to everyone that while candles can add ambiance, if left unattended the results can be tragic.”
