The Woodstock Fire Department says cooking is the number one cause of fires in homes and home fire injuries. They say to never leave the kitchen while cooking and don't let things like T.V distract you.
WOODSTOCK - It's Fire Prevention Week in the Friendly City.
Awareness is raised to prevent fires in early October and it has been going on since 1922.
This year's campaign is "Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!" and it's intended to educate people about the simple, yet important actions they can take to keep themselves safe, along with those around them, in the kitchen.
The Woodstock Fire Department says cooking is the number one cause of fires in homes and home fire injuries, and the leading cause of fires in the kitchen is due to cooking unattended. However, there is a recipe for safety.
Before you serve a meal, it's important to know about essential fire safety in order to prevent one from happening in the kitchen.
Some of the things to keep in mind include:
- Always stay in the kitchen while cooking. If you must leave, turn off the stove.
- Keep anything that burns — cooking utensils, dishcloths, paper towels and pot holders — a safe distance from the stove.
- Loose-fitting clothes can come into contact with stove burners and catch fire. Wear tight sleeves or roll them up when cooking.
- If you have a small grease fire on the stove, slide a lid over the pot and turn off the stove. Water and grease don't mix.
- Keep your eye on the pot. Don't let TV distract you. Use a timer to remind you when cooking.
- Running late? Don't let the bustle distract you. Always stay alert when cooking.
- Drink responsibly when cooking. Alcohol is a factor in many home fires.
Fire Prevention Week goes from October 4th - 10th.
