The City of Woodstock has lifted a ban on fireworks for Canada Day and Canada Day only.
WOODSTOCK - Although there will not be one singular large show, fireworks will be spotted in the sky over Woodstock on Canada Day.
Council has voted to allow for the pyrotechnics but according to Mayor Trevor Birtch they should only be set off on July 1st.
"Please make sure you go to the Fire Department Facebook page or the City of Woodstock web site and make sure you stay safe and those fireworks are for Canada Day, not 2 days after or days before, so please stay safe and enjoy Canada Day."
Fireworks are not supposed to be sold in the city until June 24th. You can see a few places selling them now, including a pop up shop on Norwich Ave.
Public Information Coordinator with the Woodstock Fire Department Lisa Woods says they want everyone to think twice before discharging.
"Make sure you are only lighting one at a time and only when they are on the ground. Never light a firework in your hand or re-light a dud firework. For dud fireworks it's best to wait 30 minutes, soak them in a bucket of water and dispose them in a metal container."
Here's a list of more fireworks tips;
- Only a responsible adult aware of the hazards and safety precautions should be lighting the fireworks.
- Read and follow the instructions on the packaging.
- Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby just in case.
- Steer clear of combustibles including buildings, trees and dry grass.
- Only light fireworks at a safe distance from onlookers upwind.
