After 22 years as a councillor, John Fortner wants to become Deputy Mayor
INGERSOLL - John Fortner is calling it quits on his time as an Ingersoll Town Councillor. The long time supporter of the community has filed papers for Deputy Mayor.
Fortner says it's time for a new challenge.
"I thought about the direction that Mayor Comiskey wants to go in. I believe that he needs a stronger right hand man. I'm going to have the time available shortly after my retirement to put more time into the political position. I thought after 30 years of service to my community -- 22 years on council, its time for me to step up and raise the bar."
Fortner says his main concern is financial sustainability and survivability.
"We're not in very good financial shape compared to where we were 20 years ago. Now mind you, we just came out of a major recession. Everybody has had some sort of economic set back in this last 7 years and we have had some major unplanned events that's been costly. We need to sit down and resolve these issues and give staff direction."
"If you want to talk about the dump, you want about how we're going to repay $2.3 million in unfinanced liabilities, you want to talk about why there's no seniors apartment in town, why there's no jobs for our young people in town -- go ahead and talk about it, but I'll resolve those issues. I don't talk about them."
Fortner says the challenge is representing all of the people in Ingersoll and he doesn't want to sit next to any candidate running on their own personal agenda.
