Four Motorcyclists Die in First Week of August

The OPP are urging motorcyclists to drive defensively after a deadly start to August

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Roads are proving to be very dangerous for motorcyclists.

OPP Constable Stacey Culbert says more steps need to be taken to ensure the safety of these motorists. "We've had alone in West Region - so that's the region that Oxford County encompasses as well - we've had four people die alone in motorcycle collisions within the first week of August. So we just want to remind everybody and all drivers to always have a watchful eye for those motorcycles and the safety of the motorcyclist is the responsibility of everyone, not just the one driving the motorcycle."

Constable Culbert says the OPP are encouraging motorcyclists to practise defensive driving. "When the motorcycle riders are coming up they have to make sure - okay I have to maintain a safe distance because I am coming into their blindspot and it's half a vehicle for them to be able see them. So they have to spend as little time as possible in that blind spot. If you can see the driver's eyes in their mirrors, than they have the ability to see you too." Motorcyclists are being told to expect the unexpected and leave extra room for mistakes.

At the end of the day, Constable Culbert says it's everyone responsibility to be safe on the roads."We need to address the fact that car drivers who are looking for bigger vehicles sometimes don't notice motorcycles in their path. Especially at intersections. A lot of the key things that we're hearing is 'I never saw him.' We hear that all too often at the scene of a motorcycle crash."
