WOODSTOCK - The Friends of the Woodstock Art Gallery Legacy Scholarship is going to a grade 12 student from Tillsonburg this year.
Page Cowell was presented with a cheque for $1,000 recently. She will be attending the Yukon School of Visual Arts in the Fall. Cowell says this was an absolute honour.
“I am absolutely honoured to have received this award, It is an excellent celebration of youth in art. I hope to invest it in my pursuit to bring art into the lives of other.
Cowell enjoys using watercolours and acrylics on canvas, and gravitates towards themes of fear and discomfort. Her work often takes on a surrealistic or haunted feel.
Art teacher Michelle Dench, who herself was a scholarship recipient in 2003, says it has been a pleasure to watch Cowell excel in the arts.
“I have witnessed first-hand her dedication to the creative process and the development of highly sophisticated themes within her artwork. The technical skill that Page displays in the execution of her artwork is very refined."
She adds that Cowell is a highly dedicated student who actively works to create a positive school culture.
This year’s award was adjudicated by WAG Advisory Board Chair Judy Dent and board member Maxine Noel. Noel who is an
internationally-recognized artist and Order of Canada recipient says that Cowell's work is very impressive.
"I was very impressed by Page’s sophistication and understanding of art at such a young age, even before entering art school.”
Chair Judy Dent further congratulates Cowell on her achievements.
“On behalf of the Woodstock Art Gallery Advisory Board, I offer her hearty congratulations on winning the Friends of the Woodstock Art Gallery Scholarship Award. Our very best wishes go to Page for much success at the Yukon School of the Visual Arts.”
The Visual Arts Scholarship was established in 1990 as a project of the Friends of the Woodstock Art Gallery.
