Oxford County will create a steering committee designed to improve our energy, social well being and the local economy.
Oxford County has adopted the future Oxford Community Sustainability Plan which was crafted by local people looking to make the County better.
One of the things that will come out of this is a steering committee will be appointed as the Oxford Transition Board with a mandate to implement the future Oxford plan. As part of the plan the County will fund two studies for energy and community well being at a cost of $300,000 which will come out of the reserves and provincial grants. Warden David Mayberry breaks down what the studies will look at.
"One will be around energy and how much energy Oxford is currently using so we know how much work we have to do to achieve our goal of being 100 percent reliant on renewable energy by 2050. The other one will be on the social end of things, looking at a community index of well being and how do the people of Oxford County actually feel about their well being in Oxford and if the County is providing all of the social outlets needed."
Mayberry says the main points in the future Oxford plan focus on energy, community well being and the economy.
"The renewable energy one has already started and that program has already started, the next one we are going to look at now is the zero waste Oxford proposal where the County will be responsible for all of our own waste, which will mean a reduction in the amount of waste we produce and getting more use out of our landfill. Energy is just one part of the plan, it also looks at the social well being of the residents in Oxford County and how to improve the basic sense of this is where I belong, this is where I live and I am satisfied about the conditions here in Oxford. Another thing the future Oxford plan will look at is the economy and how we can approve the local economy and make Oxford a place where entrepreneurs want to come and grow their business."
