When it comes to the aging dog tag program in East Zorra Tavistock, council could decide it's time to put it down.
Residents are being consulted this month about a program that has seen participation decline over the years.
CAO Jeff Carswell says now that most pet owners end up get their animals microchipped, they're questioning whether the tagging service is worth continuing. "When you start looking at the fact that most of the dogs live inside, in town. When the program was set up, it was for the dogs that roamed outside and ended up killing the neighbours' livestock, but that just doesn't happen anymore. You just start to wonder, is this still the right program?"
Carswell notes that other local townships have stuck with the program saying it seems to an "entrenched program", he's not sure it's worth the trouble, or the cost.
While half of the money paid by residents goes towards the actual cost of ordering and producing the tags, the other half helps pay for animal control costs in the township. Carswell says they're looking for the public's feedback on that issue as well. "Is it something that individuals should just pay for themselves if they end up with a stray animal on their property? Can they just phone up animal control and have them come and get it, or should it still be something the township looks after? That's something we also looking to get feedback on."
There's a survey on the township's website. They're also talking with local vets and Hillside Kennels to get their feedback on whether the dog tagging program is still relevant.
The information will be presented to EZT council in January.
