50% of local food production gets wasted. This fact was stated Monday night at the Elm Hurst Inn as part of a Food Secure Oxford presentation. The presentation featured guest speaker Joan Brady the Opportunities Project Coordinator for the Huron Perth Farm to Table Network. Brady talked about a variety of topics including the food security. Brady explained that food security takes place when people at all times have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food. It costs $189 a week to give a family of four food security. A new report states that 9.3% of Oxford County residence reported they could not afford to eat nutritiously. Brady and Food Secure Oxford said we can all help to improve food security and create movements towards a sustainable food system. Some of the ways to do that are supporting farmers markets, volunteering at the food banks and advocating for there to be gardening and food preparation classes in schools.
