Oxford Public Health issue heat alert - temperatures expected to reach 40 degrees with humidex.
OXFORD COUNTY - It's a first for this year!
Oxford County Public Health have issued the first heat alert for 2014.
Environment Canada issued a heat warning for a large portion of southern Ontario, with temperatures expected to reach 30 degrees this afternoon - coupled with humidex values nearing 40 degrees.
Public Health is reminding people to take extra precautions when caring for children, seniors, those with heat-related illnesses and people who work outdoors. In a release, Public Health say adults caring for children should watch for the usual signs of physical distress, such as rapid breathing, weakness, and headache, as well as symptoms like vomiting, sleepiness, or changes in behaviour, for instance, temper tantrums.
It's important to drink lots of water and avoid spending too much time outside - if you are outdoors, seek shade, wear a hat and avoid intense activities.
Never leave a child or pet in a car, and remember to check on family, friends and neighbours who are at risk of health complications from heat-related illness.
If someone is experiencing physical distress due to the extreme temperatures, seek medical attention immediately by calling 9-1-1 or visiting your local emergency department.
Temperatures are expected to drop back to more seasonal daytime highs by Wednesday with a cold front moving through the region Tuesday night.
