"The people living in this home were very lucky no one was injured or killed. If the fire had started in the middle of the night, this could have ended in tragedy."
BURFORD - A homeowner has been charged after a fire call in Burford.
Two stations responded to the call last month after getting a repot of smoke inside the house. When they arrived, they found that the house did not have working smoke alarms.
The owner of the property was charged $360.00 for failure to install smoke alarms where required. If the owner had been taken to court for this contravention of the Fire Code, the charges could have been up to a $50,000.00 fine or imprisonment of up to one year.
Fire Chief Michael Seth say luckily nobody was injured.
"The people living in this home were very lucky no one was injured or killed. If the fire had started in the middle of the night, this could have ended in tragedy."
Seth says there have been over 24 fire related deaths in Ontario already this year.
"This has to stop. Remember, you must have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside of sleeping areas, as well as, a carbon monoxide alarm outside of sleeping areas in your home. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms have an expiry date of up to ten years. If your alarms have expired, you are in violation of the Fire Code and subject to charges. It is your responsibility to protect you and your loved ones."
