Oxford County residents came to talk with the industry that is looking to put up a landfill in the Beachville quarry. Walker Industries held a public meeting Wednesday night addressing the community's issues. The project manager Joe Lyng was there to personally talk with residents. "We're hearing a lot of concerns. Most of them relate to ground water, property values, and the natural environment." Ingersoll resident Don Clark lives a mere kilometre away from the proposed landfill site: "I worked for 38 years at Global Stone, which is the one that's full of water. And the water flowed from the east to the west. About a half a mile away from the corner of where this dump will be is our first well. I have no question in my mind that pollution will get to that well eventually." Julie and Scott Slager also live kilometres from the space assigned for the landfill. Julie is concerned for her children: "We won't even be able to let our kids outside. Joe tells us it won't smell, but research the Niagra dump and there's all kinds of comments coming up about the smell." The Quality Inn saw well over 200 people come through its doors with similar concerns. Walker Industries provided comment cards so they can take any feedback or concern into consideration.
