Intentionally disabling a smoke alarm has left a local resident with a fine courtesy of the Woodstock Fire Department. Firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire at 125 Huron Street Tuesday morning only to discover there was no smoke or fire to be found at the property. The Fire Inspector completed a full investigation and determined the residential-tenant had disabled a smoke alarm outside the bedroom area. The resident was slapped with a $235 fine for disabling a smoke alarm to make it inoperable. Woodstock Fire are reminding residents to maintain smoke alarms at all times and never disable alarms for any reason. They have these tips to offer in dealing with nuisance smoke alarms caused by cooking vapours or steam or humidity: Replace smoke alarm that?s causing nuisance alarms by purchasing a smoke alarm equipped with a "Hush/Silence" button. Relocate the smoke alarm farther away from the cooking area to allow the cooking vapors to thin out before reaching the alarm unit. If ionization-type smoke alarm is causing nuisance alarms consider replacing it with photoelectric type smoke alarm. Additional reasons smoke alarm causing nuisance alarms is either dirty, old (more than 10 years old) or faulty.
