In the latest interview with Warden Marcus Ryan, Heart FM inquires about key issues from the County's most recent council meeting.
OXFORD COUNTY - Private landfills were a hot topic at the latest Oxford County Council meeting.
A bill was passed by the provincial government, which was used right away in Oxford County. Warden, Marcus Ryan says how it came to be.
"So Ingersoll was very successful in getting that done; it was called Bill 187. It gave municipalities the right, any municipality within 3.5 kilometers of a private landfill the right to say yes or no to that private landfill."
Ryan adds there are private landfill companies that are lobbying the provincial government to change the law or repeal it altogether to not let municipalities have the power to deny landfills. He mentions that a formal vote was passed to let him go to provincial ministers and ask them not to repeal the law.
Another topic discussed on the Heart FM Morning Show was the expansion of Strong Mayor Powers. Four areas within Oxford County will receive the Powers as of May 1st. Ryan shared his thoughts on the expansion.
"I don't think it is a good thing. I posted on Social Media about it yesterday. I think our municipal councils have worked well for a long time, and I think they work well because you get a group of people together and we have to debate the issues, then we vote."
Ryan says clarification still has to come out about whether or not the new municipalities will have the option to deny or accept the Strong Mayor Powers.
