Both the U11 and U13 Jr. Navy Vets won their respective tournaments this past weekend.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock was successful at the Regional Silver Stick qualifiers in Pelham.
Both the U11 and U13 Jr. Navy Vets won their respective tournaments with a shutout in the finals this past weekend.
The U11 team triumphed over the St. Mary's Rock 6-0, and the U13 team defeated the Welland Tigers by a score of 1-0.
Derek Tune, Head Coach of the U11 Jr. Navy Vets and former Woodstock Navy Vet himself (1999-2000) said his squad improved a lot as the tournament went on.
"We ended up playing five games overall. In the round-robin, we didn't play so well, I think we won two games and tied one, but we didn't play very well. But in the semi-finals on Sunday and then the finals, we actually played very well as a team."
The U11s are currently in the midst of their season, and it's Tune's first year coaching this group. They're currently fighting to play in the AA division, and Tune is very happy with his team's development so far.
"From the start of the year to now, there's been a big change. They've developed faster than anticipated and we're seeing the fruits of our labour... It was a little bit of a learning curve right off the bat but the kids were very determined, they listened really well and over the last month, they've really come together as a group and started playing more of a team game."
Both teams have been invited to the Silver Stick Finals Tournament that will take place in the new year.
