The LCBO will carefully consider geographic location as they choose sites for stand alone cannabis retail stores.
The Ontario government has sent out letters to all of the municipalities, detailing what steps have to be taken in order to establish cannabis retail stores.
The Liquor Control Board of Ontario is working on selecting which locations will sell marijuana once it becomes legal.
The province has sent letters to all of the municipalities, detailing the steps that have to be taken in order to select a store location.
Yasir Naqvi, the Attorney General of Ontario believes it's important to communicate with the local governments when making this decision.
"Hearing from municipal leaders and the public is key to ensuring that the needs and interests of communities are reflected in our safe and sensible approach to cannabis legalization. Working with municipalities will ensure that decisions about potential store locations are guided by our shared goals of protecting young people and keeping communities safe."
Finance Minister Charles Sousa says selecting the locations is a decision that will not be taken lightly.
"It is critical that in establishing a new, legal retail system for cannabis we protect our youth and combat the illegal market. Municipalities are essential partners in our efforts to distribute cannabis across the province. As we move forward with retail implementation, officials from the Ministry of Finance and the LCBO will meet with municipalities that have been identified for potential sites to discuss concerns and next steps in this initiative."
Under a proposed approach 40 marijuana shops could open by July 2018. That number would jump to 80 by July 2019 before eventually hitting 150 by 2020. Once a site has been selected, a notice will be posted online and the property will have a sign put up in order to inform the public.
