It's official; Oxford County will be losing 15 Complex Continuing Care beds. The South West Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) voted in favour of the recommendation Wednesday to cut 6 beds at Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital and 9 at Alexandra Hospital in Ingersoll, while leaving Woodstock with their full compliment of 33 beds. Tillsonburg Mayor John Lessif was at the meeting and says Tillsonburg specifically asked for a phase in date for the cuts to be 2016-2017. "However, the staff recommended a phase in date starting in April 2014 running through 2015 and the board supported that with the direction to the staff for them to negotiate with the Tillsonburg Hospital on that date." He anticipates the door is open for the cuts to be moved to 2015. Lessif says sensitivity needs to be given to Tillsonburg's Emergency department as the elimination of those bed puts a threat on the department being able to handle the number of patients seeking their help. According to Lessif, when the CCC beds weren't being used for their intended purpose, they were being occupied by emergency room patients. He says if the doctors in the Emergency department can't provide the kind of care needed then they won't be interested in working in that area.
