What was meant to be a joke, took a turn for the worst and went nearly viral.
WOODSTOCK - A joke on a local church sign was taken more seriously then intended.
College Avenue Church recently put on their sign "Whoever stole our AC units, keep one. It is hot where you are going."
Minister Lloyd Bennett says the sign is meant to be a joke, though some took it seriously.
"Even had a call from Toronto wondering if we would need some help in replacing the air conditioning units which we never had. We have fan conditioned worship in the summer time. There are no air conditioners at College Ave. Church, it's just something that's humorous but as they say, has suddenly gone viral."
Bennett says other callers were upset about the church condemning the fictional man.
"Some people are finding offence in the fact that the church should be preaching forgiveness and grace and not like condemnation and the thought that the piece is off to hell. That will be our message, forgiveness and grace. So maybe there's an opportunity to put a sign up next week that says 'Bring the air conditioner back, you're forgiven'."
