Kelly Byers is a local realtor who is known for her volunteer efforts in Oxford County.
WOODSTOCK - The woman behind the Realtors Care Food Drive has been honoured by the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA).
Kelly Byers was presented with the National Realtors Care Award yesterday. She's a realtor with RE/MAX a-b Realty in Woodstock and a member of the Woodstock Ingersoll Tillsonburg and Area Association of Realtors (WITAAR).
She started the local food drive 14 years ago and it has donated over 250,000 pounds of food to the Salvation Army since then.
Byers is an advocate for 100 Women Who Care Oxford County and the Oxford Local Immigration Partnership. She also played a big role in bringing a family of Syrian refugees to Woodstock.
On top of all of this, Byers and her husband recently donated $40,000 to their children's school, Roch Carrier French Immersion Public School, so they could install a new play structure.
Byers had to take a step back from her volunteer efforts in June 2023, after she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. After finding out that blood donations were down in the province, she reached out to the Oxford County community through social media to encourage more people to donate. Canadian Blood Services reported a significant uptick in the number of blood donations in Oxford County afterward.
Winning the National Realtors Care Award allowed her to donate $5,000 to a charity of her choice and she decided to go with the Stem Cell Patient Assistance Fund through the London Health Sciences Foundation.
WITAAR will be hosting the Blood for Byers blood drive at Goff Gym in Woodstock on Thursday April 25th, starting at 1:00 p.m. and lasting until 7:00 p.m. The Realtors Care Food Drive is also scheduled for Wednesday May 1st this year.
