Roadways will have more police on them this weekend, as the OPP is making sure everyone stays safe.
OXFORD COUNTY - Motorists will see an increased police presence this weekend.
As we head into the 3rd long weekend of the summer the OPP will be out in full force making sure everyone is doing their part to keep the roads safe. A video was posted on the West Region OPP Facebook page, and Inspector Mike McConnell has this message.
"Well, we do have a traffic safety initiative on for the weekend, focusing on big four and move over. So, the big four are the big four causal factors in most fatal collisions, which are impaired driving, distracted driving, not wearing seatbelts and speeding."
McConnell adds that the move-over law requires motorists to slow down and move lanes if they are safe. This gives the officer or officers and other people on the side of the road at the time the most space to complete the task safely. McConnell mentions that there are other safety measures motorists should be aware of.
"Coming into a construction zone where speeds are reduced, you have different transitions in the pavement, lane reductions, pylons, all those other visual distractions, that you leave lots of room between you and the vehicle in front of you, and that you slow down as you come into the construction zone."
The OPP in the West Region wants to make sure everyone gets home to their family and loved ones this long weekend, and does not want to have to deliver tragic news.
