Liberal government announces a lower fee for Drive Clean tests
The Liberal is lowering the fee for Ontario's Drive Clean program to $30 from $35.
The Drive Clean vehicle emission program is supposed to be revenue-neutral program, but the program has recently turned a $19-million profit.
Every two years, drivers have been paying the $35 fee for mandatory emissions tests on vehicles at least seven years old.
The program was introduced in 1999 and the Progressive Conservatives say Drive Clean has outlived its usefulness and needs to be eliminated since most cars and light trucks are easily passing the test.
The province changed the procedures however last January to use onboard diagnostic testing equipment in place of the tail pipe emissions. The change has led to an average 10% failure rate now.
