Local MP Dave MacKenzie has some concerns about border crossing if marijuana is legalized.
The local MP for Oxford County has raised some concerns about pre-clearance at the border when it comes to legalizing marijuana.
Dave Mackenzie asked the question to his peers especially when it comes to the Gordie Howe bridge. He tells Heart FM he doesn't think the Liberal party has put a lot of thought into these types of questions.
"Being if it's legalized here, it's legal for them to smoke marijuana and I know that there have been occasions where people have been turned back at the border when they admit that they are users of marijuana."
Mackenzie says all of these things need to be considered before the government moves forward with it's promise to legalize the drug.
"I don't think so, if they did, it wasn't top of their mind, for me it's not the only issue and it might not even be a top of mind issue but it is an important issue for Oxford. We have two auto plants that ship a lot of products across the border, much of what we assemble here and much of what we put together here, even from a raw product, our stamping plant sends stuff across the border for other products so it's that whole trade in the auto industry particularly but a lot of our other industries ship stuff across the border so it if gets held up at the border it puts us in a bad spot. We are not dealing from strength right now with our high energy costs so any little thing that slows it down at the border is going to be tough on our industry."
