MADD says the message seems to be getting through to many people, but there is still work to be done before impaired driving can be eliminated.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving have been out in full force this holiday season.
Project Red Ribbon is an initiative to spread the message about the dangers of driving impaired. President of the MADD London Chapter, Mary Rodriguez, says they have been successful in reaching a wide range of people this holiday season. "This is when most people are out celebrating the season, and we just want to make sure that they celebrate safely. We've done several R.I.D.E. programs all over Ontario; different chapters with community leaders and MADD - the response is really great we have met with numerous people who are very supportive of our cause."
Rodriguez says they want people to really start planning ahead. "Our focus is to be more preventative because the best solution to prevent drinking and driving is to have plans in place before hand to make sure that you are not caught in the position afterwards, because that is the last place you want to be because it might be your own coffin. There are plenty of ways to get home."
Rodriguez says they plan to keep campaigning in 2016. "Just making sure that we stay in contact with members of Parliament to ensure that we move forward with some preventative measures in terms of random breath testing which is one the best preventative measures out there. It has been known to reduce upwards of 25% of injuries and death caused by impaired driving."
