SWPH Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce lock says COVID-19 vaccines may or may not be mandatory for kids to go to school and it could take a couple of years of research before a decision is made.
SOUTHWESTERN PUBLIC HEALTH - It could be a couple of years before we get an answer on whether or not COVID-19 vaccines will be mandatory for children to attend school.
SWPH Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock says it is too early to answer that question.
"We don't make the flu vaccine mandatory and we are going to have to watch and see how this COVID-19 vaccine behaves and how it impacts schools. Right now, many other vaccines are mandatory, we do that so that we protect all the other children in the class."
Dr. Lock says it could be a few years before we have enough research.
"We may or may not make it part of the mandatory school vaccine program. I think we need at least another year or two or maybe even three to watch out COVID vaccines impact children and schools and then we will be able to answer that question."
Currently in Ontario, children must be vaccinated for tetanus, measles, chicken pox, polio, mumps, rubella, meningitis, diphtheria, and whooping cough to attend school, unless they have a medical exemption.
