Oxford County's Social Housing Director is encouraged the federal government has pledged more money in it's spring budget. Paul Beaton says while Oxford isn't a part of the Homelessness Partnership Initiative, which is money for biggest centres with more people out on the street, Beaton does say money for affordable housing could be in the cards. "What was in the federal budget was an announcement of a 5-year commitment to continue with the affordable housing money on the federal side. So what that would take next week is a commitment form the provincial government in their budget, that they will continue with the affordable housing program." Beaton says if the province does match, the funding wouldn't be available until 2014. But he says there would be interest in developing new projects. "Ya absolutely, we have numerous interested proponents in Oxford County that would continue with the development of affordable housing." Oxford has received $10.5-million in funding previously that has helped establish the Mill St. project, and will help renovate the Harvey Woods Building (in photo) into affordable housing.
