All Ontario post secondary schools have until March 31st, 2022 to update their policies to better protect those reporting sexual violence or harassment.
ONTARIO - The province is calling on all post secondary schools to update their sexual violence and harassment policies.
This applies to all publicly assisted colleges and universities as well as private career colleges.
They have until March 31st, 2022 to make it so those reporting sexual violence won't have to worry about facing backlash for violating the school's drug and alcohol policies at the time of the incident. School investigators also won't be able to ask irrelevant questions about the victims past sexual history.
All schools must review their sexual violence policies after three years and they also have to provide an annual report to their board of governors.
Minister of Colleges and Universities Jill Dunlop says students should be able to safety go off to college or university without having to worry about sexual violence.
"That’s why our government is working with post secondary institutions to update their sexual violence and harassment policies to better support students who have already gone through a difficult experience and may be feeling scared and vulnerable."
Western University has been making headlines lately, after allegations recently surfaced over social media suggesting that over 30 women had been drugged and sexually assaulted at a first-year student residence. A London Police investigation is currently underway and you can read more about that online here.
