OPAL Alliance President Bryan Smith says we've won a huge battle against the Southwestern Landfill proposal, but the war is not over yet.
OXFORD COUNTY - The President of OPAL Alliance was happy to hear that Walker Environmental has decided to put their Environmental Assessment for the Southwestern Landfill on hold.
Bryan Smith says this is a huge win for the community, but the war is not over yet.
"Putting it on hold doesn't mean that they've withdrawn it and that's what they need to do. They need to understand that their project is an inappropriate technology. Essentially what they're suggesting is we're just going to dump things in the ground; that's 4,000 years old! Give me a break there are better technologies."
Zorra Township Council passed a motion stating it was not a willing host for the landfill during a meeting last Wednesday. Ingersoll Council discussed a similar motion last night and South-West Oxford Council and County Council will also discuss the matter during their meetings this week.
Smith says OPAL will be watching these meetings very closely. He says they have also sent a letter David Piccini, Ontario's new Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
"We did get an opportunity to sit down and talk to the previous Minister Jeff Yurek. We have yet to have that opportunity to with David Piccini, but we have sent him a letter saying we would really like to discuss this with you."
He says the Ministry is currently holding a consultation regarding land use compatibility planning and this is the perfect opportunity to make sure the new Minister is up to speed on the landfill battle.
