Pop-Up Library is digital service that works like a WiFi hotspot, allowing users to access eBooks on a mobile device.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Oxford County Library has become the first library in Canada to launch Pop-Up Library.
Pop-up Library is digital service which allows readers to access eBooks on a mobile device.
Systems Support Librarian with Oxford County Library Sarah McDonald says this is a new way of attracting new readers.
"Our hope is, of course, that you really love the resource and you do want to get a library card and then you can use all of our other online resources, but it's just a way we can reach out to the community, get people using eBooks and accessing our collection."
It is currently in five different locations across Oxford County, including the Ingersoll Olde Bakery Café and Tillsonburg Community Centre.
Anyone within range of the mobile device can gain access and McDonald says you don't even need a library card.
"Go into your WiFi and you're going to see one called 'WiFi Library.' You log onto to that and then you're going to be able to access all of the eBooks and the audiobooks on Axis 360 instantly, for free, you don't even need the library card."
Once the eBook has been downloaded using one of the WiFi hotspots, McDonald adds you can keep reading the book offline and it will stay on your device for one week.
The Pop-Up Library is a pilot project and it will be available at the five locations until the end of January 2019.
