Better rail transportation is included in Oxford County's Strategic Plan.
OXFORD COUNTY - Changes could be on the horizon for local rail service.
Ken Westcar from Transportation Action Ontario presented a delegation to County Council this week, calling on council to advocate for better rail service here in Oxford.
Warden Marcus Ryan says VIA Rail is currently working on a proposal with Amtrak, that would extend Amtrak's rail service into Canada.
"The idea there is that it's a big economic link and corridor and they want to extend that service, which is an opportunity to talk about better rail service in Oxford and connecting Oxford to Toronto and across the border to Detroit and the United States."
County Council has agreed to be an advocate for this issue and explains what will happen next.
"What we're going to have to do is sit with ministers. We'll probably sit down with Oxford MP Arpan Khanna and try to get a sit down with the federal Transportation Minister (Pablo Rodriguez) and say we really need VIA to include this service in Oxford as part of this improvement. We're probably going to sit down with VIA Rail executives as well."
Warden Ryan says better rail transportation is included in Oxford County's Strategic Plan.
