It's the 25th anniversary of the dragon boat festival at the Pittock Conservation Area.
WOODSTOCK - The Pharmasave Woodstock Dragon Boat Festival is less than a week away!
The popular event will be taking place on the north shore of the Pittock Conservation Area this Saturday. The racing will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., ending with the 2,000 metre final.
Dave Harris, a Member of the Woodstock Rotary Club, explains what a dragon boat is and what a team looks like.
" A dragon boat is a 40 foot long canoe essentially. There are 20 paddlers in that canoe and there is a steer person and a drummer in the front to keep the beat. With 20 paddlers, you've got to have somebody keeping track of what's going on with each paddle."
Over 30 teams have registered, with some local and others travelling from out of town. Spectators will be able to witness all of the action for free.
The event is hosted by the Woodstock Rotary Club, which supports charities in Oxford County and beyond. Harris gives us an example of one of the local causes being supported by festival registration and sponsorship.
"South Gate Centre runs an Angel Food program and it supports people in Oxford County who have a home, but are poor and can't afford food. So they support that group very well and we want to financially support that."
The Rotary Club has also pledged to donate $17,000 per year over the next five years to the new Community Kitchen at South Gate Centre. It also funds a Dragon Boat scholarship for young athletes who make the national team.
