
All of Oxford's Junior C hockey teams won their home and season openers over the weekend.
PJHL - It was a busy weekend in the Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL), as the regular season got underway for Oxford County's Junior C hockey teams.
The Woodstock Navy Vets crushed the Wellesley Applejacks 7-3 on Friday. It was an intense third period, with the Vets scoring five goals including four in the last six minutes of the game.
However, the Vets did suffer a tough loss to the Norwich Merchants yesterday. Woodstock was down 2-0 but was able to take the lead, before Norwich tied the game with 16 second left in regulation. The Merchants scored just over four minutes into overtime to secure the 4-3 win in the end.
This was the Merchants second win of the weekend, after they slipped past the New Hamburg Firebirds 7-6 on Friday.
The Tavistock Braves also beat the Paris Titans 6-2 on Friday and 5-3 on Saturday.
The Braves, the Merchants and the Hespeler Shamrocks are tied for first place in the Doherty Division standings with four points each. The Navy Vets sit in second place with three points, the Applejacks are in third place with two points, and the Firebirds are tied with the Dorchester Dolphins for fourth place with one point each. The Paris Titans sit at the bottom of the standings with zero points to start the season.
Looking at the Yeck Division, the Thamesford Trojans celebrated a 3-2 victory over the Mount Brydges Bulldogs on Friday and a 6-4 win over the Lucan Irish on Saturday.
The Trojans are tied with the North Middlesex Stars for first place in the Yeck Division standings with four points each.
