Woodstock Police are hoping for a safe Halloween night. They say the key to that is kids making sure they're looking both ways and crossing the road when it's all clear. Constable Steve McEwen suggests staying on the same side of the street, and crossing once at intersections, rather than zig-zagging down the streets. "When you are going from door to door, go to homes that are well lit. Go in areas were you know the people, maybe in your own neighbourhood. And if the house is in darkness, maybe just stay from that one and carry on to the next one". McEwen also asks parents to have a look through their kids treats to make sure none have been tampered with. He says there haven't been any incidents in Woodstock, but it's always good to check. If your kids are older, and going out on their own, make sure they're with a group of friends, that they have a plan of where they're going, and a time to return home. McEwen also asks drivers to proceed with caution tonight, "I'm also thinking about drivers watching out for all the people out. Depending on the weather, it will probably dictate how many people are going to be out there, but let's all keep an eye out for each other and be safe". Woodstock Police encourage parents to review these helpful tips before the trick or treaters head out tonight: Use face make-up or enlarge the eyes on your mask so you can see well. Properly fitted costume that is bright and if possible use reflective tape. Costumes should be short enough to avoid tripping Consider carrying a flashlight to help out in dark areas, and maybe alleviate some frights as well. Crossing the street can be dangerous so avoid that as much as possible, go up one side of the street and then down the other. Visit the front doors of well lit homes and never go inside. Plan a route and time to be home, and stay close to home. Younger children should go with an adult and older children should trick or treat in groups. Always be sure an adult checks candy thoroughly before consumption.
