Posting RIDE program locations anywhere is not ideal according to police.
The OPP are asking the public to not put the location of RIDE programs on social media.
Lisa Narancsik, Oxford OPP Constable, says these programs are done in the interest of public safety, and tipping people off means they can't be as effective, "We do the RIDEs to reduce impaired drivers. So if people know where the RIDEs are and they happen to have had a couple of drinks then they are putting not only the driver at risk, but the driver is also putting anyone who may be walking or driving on the roadways at risk as well."
Narancsik also says by the time that Tweet or Facebook post goes out the officers might already be changing locations. They also have officers on shift who can set up RIDE checks whenever and where ever they think it best.
"For those people that are tweeting the locations of the RIDE programs, we just want to remind them that police rely on the public to report crime, and impaired driving is a crime so we don't want to encourage people to avoid the RIDE especially if they have been drinking because that's the whole purpose - the reduce impaired driving."She says it's simple - Keep It Same and Sober this holiday season.
"Because we have the designated RIDEs we also have people working shifts that are out doing RIDEs. They could pop up at any time. When officer's set up a location they might not be there the entire time - they will move around. So you're never sure where they may be," Narancsik adds.
The OPP's message this season and always is simple - Keep It Safe and Sober.
