The City of Woodstock will be flying the Pride Flag today to celebrate our diversity, but it comes after a heartbreaking weekend for the community.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock will be showing it's true colours today as the Pride Flag is flown.
This moment is especially poignant after a devastating attack at an L-G-B-T-Q Orlando Florida nightclub early yesterday morning that left 49 people dead. Vigils are being held across both the U-S and Canada as many pause to honour the victims.
According to the chairperson of the Oxford County L-G-B-T-Q Pride Committee, this is the first time the flag has been flown at City Hall in the Friendly City and it will be up for the entire week. Murray says this step is going in the right direction.
"As many of you know or may not know the pride rainbow flag is a universal symbol for diversity and acceptance for the LGBTQ community. It really endorses that Oxford county, Woodstock city council and our community supports our diversity and inclusion of the LGBTQ community"
She adds times have changed in Woodstock.
"There was a lot of scepticism and we were concerned. This demonstrates we are moving forward and our community is not buying into myths about homophobia and heterosexism and we have support. I think it is fabulous."
