With the number of scams circulating, the Oxford Alzheimer Society felt it was time to offer a free, identity theft session.
OXFORD COUNTY -- The Oxford Alzheimer Society is teaming up with Woodstock Police Services and Oxford OPP to inform the public on how they can protect themselves from identity theft.
With the number of scams that are circulating on the internet and by phone, the Alzheimer Society felt it was time to offer the free session for the general public and not just those living with dementia or alzheimer's.
Behavioural Support Worker Beth Haas says the police officers will be presenting examples of scams they have dealt with in Oxford County and ones that are being noticed nationally. "And then they will give tips and ideas of how to prevent this from occurring to them, as individuals. How to keep themselves save, how to protect their personal information so that someone doesn't pose as them, things like as simple as shredding their personal documents for example."
Haas highlights a phone scam that was reported to them recently. "Someone saying that this is your grandchild calling, I need some money and posing as a grandchild who has taken an unexpected trip far away. Grandparents are falling for this - this occurred to a friend of one of our clients."
They knew that this was a topic that appealed not just to the clients of the Alzheimer Society but perhaps seniors in general.
The sessions are taking place Tuesday August 5th at South Gate Centre in Woodstock from 1:00 - 2:30 pm, Wednesday August 6th in Ingersoll at the Seniors Centre from 10:00 - 11:30 am and in Tillsonburg at the Seniors Centre from 1:30 - 3:00 pm.
For more information, call Beth Haas at 519-421-2466 or email: info@alzheimer.oxford.on.ca. Haas says there is no pre registration required.
